102-этажный небоскреб [ skyscraper], построенный в 1930-31 в г. Нью-Йорке на месте старого отеля "Уолдорф-Астория" [ Waldorf-Astoria] и официально открытый 1 мая 1931. Находится на Пятой авеню [ Fifth Avenue] между западными 33-й и 34-й улицами. Считался самым высоким сооружением в мире до возведения в 1971 первой башни Центра международной торговли [ World Trade Center]. Первоначальная высота 381 м, но после установки на крыше нескольких телеантенн в 1950 она увеличилась до 448,7 м. Здание было построено в период Великой депрессии [ Great Depression], и в течение долгого времени большая часть его помещений общей площадью более 200 тыс. кв. м пустовала, и владельцы [Empire State, Inc.] получали доходы только от платных экскурсий, причем число посетителей в те годы перевалило за 4 млн.
